Mage AI OAuth session issuing fell back to user-supplied identity
Unsupported or failed OAuth provider resolution could fall through to an email supplied by the requester, creating a session without verified identity.

Basis and provenance
The inspected, merged Mage PR #6204 includes reproduction tests for existing-account impersonation and self-asserted account creation. The fix is present in source as of October 16, but a shipped fixed release and real victim deployment are not verified in the current evidence. Null impact avoids extrapolating to all installations.

At a glance
There are two distinct security questions: whether an OAuth identity actually came from a trusted provider and whether the resulting account may invoke powerful actions. Fixing the first does not automatically make existing terminal and Git endpoints least-privileged. The record does not establish a particular victim account or production compromise.
Read the implicationsA final tagged distributable release and container image containing the patch were not independently verified. No confirmed exploited user account or operational dataset compromise.
Limits and uncertaintyFull account
Mage AI's affected session flow promoted a claim supplied by the client into account identity. A request could specify an unsupported OAuth provider, fail to produce a verified provider identity and nonetheless continue to local user lookup or account creation using the request's email address. That made session issuance possible without the external verification that the OAuth path was supposed to require.
The maintainer's PR #6204 changes the ordering: reject unknown providers, failed verification and missing validated identity before looking up or creating a user. Regression tests reproduced impersonation and new-account creation before the patch and rejection afterward. The source change was merged on October 16, 2026; the available evidence does not establish which published image or package tag first included it. Affected users need version-specific deployment evidence rather than an assumption that any repository merge upgrades a running service.
A forged session may lead to further consequences through file, Git or terminal features, depending on the resulting account's permissions. Those are not all part of the OAuth bug itself. Mage's separate shell-construction, repository-role and terminal-output findings each retain distinct prerequisites and remediation states. This authentication failure is conventional server-side code inside an AI-capable development platform; the research does not establish that an autonomous model caused or exploited it.

Implications
There are two distinct security questions: whether an OAuth identity actually came from a trusted provider and whether the resulting account may invoke powerful actions. Fixing the first does not automatically make existing terminal and Git endpoints least-privileged. The record does not establish a particular victim account or production compromise.
Controls and mitigations
- Deploy the Mage source fix merged in PR #6204 and reject all unknown providers, missing verified subject identifiers and failed provider verifications before any local session issuance.
- Retest existing-user impersonation and unwanted new-account creation, then separately audit terminal and Git permissions for valid sessions.
Unknowns and contradictions
- A final tagged distributable release and container image containing the patch were not independently verified.
- No confirmed exploited user account or operational dataset compromise.
