Open Cairn control panels let outsiders send tasks to pentesting agents
NorForge documented attempted takeover of exposed autonomous pentest-agent panels, including task injection and some payload execution.
Seventeen accessible Cairn panels in NorForge tests; unauthorized task submission and selected payload effects were reported, but attribution and population-wide host compromise remain uncertain.

Basis and provenance
NorForge reported tests against reachable panels and selected payload effects, but did not establish complete compromise of every panel. Impact remains unrated because the scoped record does not establish a calibrated severity-to-impact-band mapping.

At a glance
Seventeen exposed panels are neither seventeen proven host takeovers nor one attributed criminal group.
Read the implicationsIt is not established which agents were legitimate operator testing rather than criminal deployments. The number of hosts with durable successful malware persistence is not known.
Limits and uncertaintyFull account
NorForge tested exposed Cairn orchestration panels and describes unauthorized task creation against seventeen accessible environments. The attack surface was not the language model’s answer in isolation. A party who could reach the panel could submit work to an agent already equipped for security testing, redirecting that delegated authority toward credential access, host modifications or malware staging. The study reports some executions of a Poseidon worker-health payload and attempts to add SSH authorized keys. That does not show every panel was compromised at host level.
This event is distinct from NorForge’s earlier observation that some Cairn dashboards exposed campaign material. Here the tested direction is outsider-to-agent task injection, not simply observing someone else’s project or inferring its victims. It also differs from ReliaQuest’s individually investigated server intrusion. The identity of several panel operators remained unresolved, so the results should not be combined into one criminal campaign without shared actor or infrastructure evidence.

NorForge October 26 report, exposed panel count, task injection and Poseidon payload observations
Implications
Seventeen exposed panels are neither seventeen proven host takeovers nor one attributed criminal group.
Controls and mitigations
- Authenticate panel task creation, restrict agent worker privileges, isolate targets and correlate submitted commands with host-level traces.
Unknowns and contradictions
- It is not established which agents were legitimate operator testing rather than criminal deployments.
- The number of hosts with durable successful malware persistence is not known.
