Hermes Agent lost MCP tool discovery when a tool-list event exceeded one MiB
Large MCP tools/list events caused Hermes Agent tool discovery to fail after successful initialization, with a decoder size limit distinct from total HTTP body limits.
Hermes Agent issue reported in October 2026, including reproduced v0.22.2 configurations and unusually large MCP tool registries. The final Hermes release fix was not confirmed in the provided evidence.

Basis and provenance
Hermes issue #138329 includes reporter reproduction on Docker and macOS and describes an httpx2 decoder 1 MiB per-event limit, with larger Cloudflare and Higgsfield tool lists. It does not establish a released, retested Hermes fix; third-party error translation obscured the underlying size problem.
Impact basis: A large MCP tools/list SSE frame could make an otherwise initialized integration fail and be disabled by retries. Impact is tool availability for affected client/dependency combinations, not attacker execution or exfiltration.

Evidence basis: CLM-HERMES-MCP-SSE-TOOLS-LIMIT · Hermes Agent issue: SSE event size disrupts MCP tool listing
At a glance
The reported Cloudflare listing had thousands of tools, while smaller but still oversized responses also failed. The root issue is protocol event framing and error reporting, not a prompt injection or unauthorized tool effect.
Read the implicationsThe reporter reproduced the issue on specified Docker and macOS setups. A Hermes project patch or universal fixed release was not confirmed in the cited thread; changing all limits to unbounded values would introduce a separate denial-of-service hazard.
Limits and uncertaintyFull account
An MCP connection can pass its handshake and still become unusable when the client receives the list of tools it is allowed to call. The Hermes Agent report describes server responses containing thousands of tool descriptions, including a several-megabyte Cloudflare list. A one-megabyte SSE event decoder limit introduced along the dependency path rejected the subsequent tools/list event and surfaced a generic stream-ended error, despite earlier healthy initialization.
The failure is a framing and compatibility issue, not proof of an attacker obtaining tool authority. It also must not be merged with an unrelated ten-megabyte HTTP body guard. The amount of data in one SSE event, the cumulative response body, the number of tools and the nesting of each tool schema consume resources at different stages of parsing. Retry loops can compound the incident by disabling a server after repeated opaque errors.
The MCP SDK later offered configurable event limits, but the supplied issue did not verify a completed Hermes application fix. A sound reproduction covers a small registry, a single event just above the threshold, and a paginated or streaming alternative. The correct response should identify the violated limit and preserve connectivity for unaffected servers rather than silently treating tool discovery as a disconnected transport.

Implications
The reported Cloudflare listing had thousands of tools, while smaller but still oversized responses also failed. The root issue is protocol event framing and error reporting, not a prompt injection or unauthorized tool effect.
Controls and mitigations
- Make SSE event size configurable with explicit resource bounds, paginate large tool listings and expose the actual size error to callers.
Unknowns and contradictions
- The reporter reproduced the issue on specified Docker and macOS setups. A Hermes project patch or universal fixed release was not confirmed in the cited thread; changing all limits to unbounded values would introduce a separate denial-of-service hazard.
