Docker Sandboxes copied host files beyond workspace limits through symlinks

A sandbox can plant symbolic links under the shared workspace that point outside the permitted tree. CVE-2026-103916 documents host-private file reads and overwrites within invoking-user permissions, fixed in Docker Sandboxes 0.51.0.

Basis and provenance

research demonstration; demonstrated. The cited primary disclosure supports the specific sequence and boundaries described here: A sandbox-controlled process plants a symlink inside the shared workspace pointing outside the permitted tree. The evidence does not independently establish consequences beyond the record's supported outcome; a numerical impact band cannot be justified from the available evidence. Evidence grade C reflects the source attribution and independent verification limits.

At a glance

Mechanism and trust boundary

  1. 01

A sandbox-controlled process plants a symlink inside the shared workspace pointing outside the permitted tree.

  2. 02

A host user invokes sbx cp on a path that crosses the symlink.

  3. 03

The copy operation resolves to host-private or host-owned files rather than remaining confined to the workspace.

Claims & evidence

CLM-DB07-015-OUTCOMECVE-2026-103916 documents host-private file reads and overwrites within invoking-user permissions, fixed in Docker Sandboxes 0.51.0. An explicit host copy operation and planted link are prerequisites.supported

Implications

Resolve paths with a no-follow confined traversal and test nested symlinks in both copy directions.

Unknowns and contradictions

  • Requires preplanted symlink and user copy action, no confirmed wild exploit; no precise first affected version reported.
