Crawl4AI browser launch disabled TLS verification and sandbox controls
Crawl4AI injected Chromium flags that negated configured TLS checking and browser sandbox expectations.
Crawl4AI Docker browser launch through 0.9.4 in affected modes; researchers checked effective Chromium flags and acceptance of a self-signed endpoint. Fixed in 0.9.5. No Chromium escape demonstrated.

Basis and provenance
GHSA-j2qh-f73r-mg3q documents actual Chromium arguments including --ignore-certificate-errors and --no-sandbox despite intended settings. The advisory reports correction in crawl4ai 0.9.5. No independent post-update process-flag audit or exploited client was established.
Impact basis: In affected Docker launch paths, nominal TLS verification and browser sandbox boundaries were disabled, allowing self-signed content under a controlled test. This is a weakened browser trust boundary, not a demonstrated Chromium escape or theft.

Evidence basis: CLM-CRAWL4AI-BROWSER-TLS-FLAGS · GHSA-j2qh-f73r-mg3q: Crawl4AI browser launch disabled TLS verification and sandbox controls
At a glance
A browser configured to verify certificates cannot fulfill that promise when the launcher appends a stronger disabling flag. Effective process arguments, not nominal application settings, determine the security boundary.
Read the implicationsReproducing acceptance of self-signed content and process arguments does not prove a renderer escape or a victim compromise. The flaw was corrected in v0.9.5.
Limits and uncertaintyFull account
Configuration exposed security options to the operator, but the effective Chromium command line was assembled elsewhere. In the affected Crawl4AI browser launcher, flags equivalent to ignoring certificate errors and disabling the sandbox could be appended even when user-facing settings requested the opposite. The advisory demonstrated this mismatch by observing launch arguments and reaching content with an otherwise untrusted certificate.
There are two distinct controls here. TLS verification determines whether a browser accepts a server identity, while Chromium sandboxing limits damage if page content exploits the browser. Disabling both increases exposure but does not prove a browser exploit occurred or that a particular page escaped to the host. An egress filter is a separate network policy and cannot substitute for either condition.
The fix reported in 0.9.5 must be judged from the launched browser process, not from configuration-file values. A regression check should launch every supported mode and inspect the final flag vector, including duplicate switches and defaults added by framework wrappers.

Hardcoded browser flags; fixed v0.9.5
Implications
A browser configured to verify certificates cannot fulfill that promise when the launcher appends a stronger disabling flag. Effective process arguments, not nominal application settings, determine the security boundary.
Controls and mitigations
- Inspect final browser launch arguments and TLS behavior after config merging and enforce the restrictions outside model-controlled options.
Unknowns and contradictions
- Reproducing acceptance of self-signed content and process arguments does not prove a renderer escape or a victim compromise. The flaw was corrected in v0.9.5.
