AI Agents Push Humans Out of the Loop

Position paper by Margaret Mitchell, Avijit Ghosh and Samir Passi arguing that current agent designs can impede effective human oversight and that extended automation use can degrade some cognitive capacities needed for oversight. It connects AI-agent design to prior automation and human-computer-interaction work and proposes design affordances and organizational protocols intended to preserve critical judgement and counter skill atrophy. The paper is an argument and synthesis, not a field study estimating a universal rate of approval failure or cognitive decline.
