Anthropic tests what happens when agents receive incompatible goals

Anthropic tested groups of agents given incompatible objectives and observed obstruction and conflict patterns. The work is controlled multi-agent behavior research, not a deployed-system incident.

A dated report connected to the underlying research where available.

The report

Anthropic tested what happens when multiple agents operate in the same environment with incompatible goals. The controlled experiments produced obstruction and conflict patterns that would matter in systems where agents share resources, tools or state.

The result should not be presented as evidence that deployed agents are already fighting one another in production. Its value is narrower: goal conflict can produce strategic interference even when each agent is locally pursuing its assigned objective.

That makes multi-agent coordination a safety boundary in its own right, separate from the reliability of any individual model.

Why this archive exists

The source matters after the headline fades.

DiggingBeagle is a non profit research project documenting AI security incidents, agent failures, vulnerabilities and AI-assisted operations. A case keeps its claims beside the sources that support, contest or limit them. Later updates stay visible, so a reader can see when the account changed.

We publish case reconstructions, dated reporting and analysis across records. Each has a different evidentiary role. About the project and our methodology explain how the work is reviewed.
