OpenAI Images 2.6

Fast and high-detail image models with GIF, edit-targeting and SVG workflows; security relevance centers on provenance, consent and identity consistency.

Record description

Images 2.6 is OpenAI's November 4, 2026 image model family, including a faster Flare variant and a higher-detail Sunburst variant. The release adds uniform-frame spritesheet-to-GIF workflows, localized edit markup through API and SVG export for compatible workflows. OpenAI reports overall generation about 50% faster than its predecessor, which is a vendor measurement rather than a universally reproduced latency result. An exported GIF is frame-based animation rather than continuous generative video; an exported SVG need not expose every object as a separately editable vector primitive. Faster identity-consistent edits can improve legitimate creative production and also increase the importance of provenance and consent, without proving a new impersonation incident or bypass of safeguards.

OpenAI also reports roughly four billion generated images per week across ChatGPT, Codex and API traffic, a provider-reported production volume rather than a verified external count. The November 4 launch distinguishes Flare's low-quality speed path (some API calls as short as six seconds) from Sunburst's medium/high-quality detail and editing consistency. An image-generation model's improved repeated character fidelity is relevant to identity provenance, but a GIF stitched from separate frames does not confer the temporal consistency or audio behavior of a live video impersonation. Provenance controls have to be evaluated after SVG export, animation assembly and subsequent editing, not inferred from the model-family name.
