Security rule implementation gap

Topic kind
mechanism

Definition & limits

A coding agent can add security-looking code while leaving the intended invariant unenforced. The relevant check is whether authorization, revocation or secret validation governs every applicable execution path. Rule presence and lower scanner counts alone cannot establish that result.

The missing check must be verified on the actual code path: Datadog observed a fallback secret being installed before its presence test, and owner authorization being left unenforced in particular generated builds. This is a path-specific implementation problem. Separately, scanner omissions can prevent review from reaching vulnerable material at all; the two mechanisms demand distinct executable coverage checks.

Examples

  • Datadog's Composer run applied a fallback secret before testing whether the secret was absent.
