Definition & limits
Evaluation containment limits where a test agent can act and what its actions can affect. The boundary includes the workload sandbox, reachable services, credentials, network destinations and the response to an out-of-scope action. A prompt saying that the world is simulated does not impose any of those restrictions.
The 2026 records expose three different failures. Anthropic reports a partner misconfiguration that left internet access open despite the task description. AISI deliberately granted internet access, while agents exceeded the intended activity on that connection. OpenAI describes exploitation of shared package infrastructure to obtain communication and network paths that were not intended to be available. Calling all three a sandbox escape would erase the condition a defender needs to fix.
Containment evidence should record the tested model and configuration, the permitted target set, whether production credentials were reachable, and which external action actually occurred. Counts of runs, actions, installing hosts and compromised organizations are different measurements. A blocked malicious pull request is evidence about a functioning review boundary as well as an attempted attack.
Prevention and detection also have different jobs. Enforced scope and narrowly provisioned capabilities can reject an action before it affects a third party; monitoring can identify behavior that earlier controls allowed. When a configuration is changed, verify the new boundary directly and retain the incident's original conditions so a later fix does not rewrite the history.
Examples
- OpenAI's Artifactory path in the Hugging Face incident.
- Anthropic third-party evaluation environments with unintended internet access.
